An Ode to Imperfection
Article by Jared Nelson
I want to preface this article by paying respect to the friends over at Imperfects. Ever since I came across Imperfects, I have valued their perspective on the human experience and the beauty they find in imperfections. Their outlook resonated with me and got me thinking, so I decided to write it down and see where it goes.
There are so many ways to look at and perceive imperfection. Some see imperfection as the antagonist; the thing they want to conquer in life. It makes sense. Not too long ago, I had a very similar view on imperfection and a desire to achieve this idea of perfection, but where would that lead me? Everyone’s idea of perfection is vastly different. What if I achieved mine? Now, I don’t believe that’s even possible. And if it is possible, I don’t think I’m interested.
I see imperfections as part of my life process. Everything I do is imperfect, but that’s what makes it mine. Seeing these imperfections as growth allows me to continue to create things and actually enjoy them. At this point, the imperfect nature of my art is what I love about it; the dust, the grain, the patina, the character.
What’s funny is that when I was pursuing my idea of perfection, I often didn’t make it very far in the process. I would notice an imperfection and go back to fix it or start over. This caused me to not get much done, or if I did, I typically didn’t take much pride in it. This is not to say I don’t hold myself to a certain standard or not fix mistakes I make, but over-revision can halt growth and that’s one thing that makes this human experience so special; growth.
Basically what I’m getting at here is that imperfection is a beautiful thing. It teaches us appreciation, patience, uniqueness, and a whole lot more I’m sure. I believe that if you allow yourself to live and create naturally and embrace imperfection, then you will grow and become exactly what you want in life without ever worrying if you’ll be perfect.
